The Mengle Memorial Library Is a Family Place Library.

Mengle Memorial Library of Brockway has been recognized as a Family Place Library and presented with their banner. Tracy LaStella from Family Place Libraries in New York presented the importance of Family Place Libraries at the event. In the afternoon, Representative Cris Dush also took time to visit the library and learn about the program.

Family Place Libraries are special because they focus on all areas of child development, with programs and play spaces dedicated to young childre. In addition to books, programs and story time, Mengle Memorial Library offers a space to come play that is developmentally appropriate. The library has an inviting play area where children can bake a cake, build a castle, read a book, build a train track, put on a puppet show, and use their imagination. The play kitchen is a favorite spot for many of our young visitors. Extremely popular right now is our new Lego table. This new addition was purchased with funds from our Friends of the Library Wonderful Wednesday event held in April.

This project is made possible by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services as administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Education through the Office of Commonwealth Libraries, and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Tom Wolf, Governor.

PA Forward

The Pennsylvania Library Association is pleased to introduce PA Forward. This initiative redefines the library’s role in our Commonwealth within the context of five essential Literacies that Pennsylvanians must attain in order to succeed as citizens, parents, students, employers, employees, and consumers:

1. Basic Literacy – Libraries can push Pennsylvania to achieve one of the highest literacy rates in the country, a better trained and more skilled workforce, and a growing tax base, economy, and population.

2. Information Literacy – Libraries can help all Pennsylvanians learn how to use online resources and current technology to improve their education, to enhance their job skills, and to participate fully in a digital society.

3. Civic and Social Literacy – Libraries can give citizens of all ages the knowledge and skills they need to improve their lives, to contribute effectively in their communities, and to participate in civil discourse.

4. Health Literacy – Libraries can play an important role in helping citizens actively manage their own and their family’s well-being, making them effective partners with their health care providers and reducing costs.

5. Financial Literacy – Libraries can help citizens become informed consumers and guide individuals, small businesses, and other organizations to contribute to the economic vitality of their communities.
